Commitment 3:
Build Background Knowledge for All Students
1. Build an academic vocabulary
2. Build a basic vocabulary for English language learners and students from poverty to achieve literacy.
3. Encourage reading across various content areas and genres.
Everyone knows that students from disadvantaged backgrounds, who are not well prepared for school, have the toughest time making the grade. But what hasn't been so clear is what schools can do about it. Simply using a strategy does not guarantee positive results. Rather, it's how someone uses the strategy that determines whether it produces great results, mediocre results, or no results at all.
