Health and education are intimately linked. Recent research in the state of Washington confirms what educators and parents have known for a long time, healthy children are more successful in school. Children with poor health are likely to have difficulty learning which may ultimately cause academic problems and for some, failure to graduate from high school. Interestingly, the reverse is also true; those students who have academic problems are at higher risk for developing future health problems in adulthood. This connection suggests that health services are an essential component of a school system and should be an integral part of the school improvement planning process. This is particularly important in light of data that revels that more than a quarter of US children have chronic health conditions.
In a recent report, Research Review: School-based Health Interventions and Academic Achievement issued jointly by the Washington State Board of Health, Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and Department of Health, the following findings were noted:
• Health and education are linked.
• Every health risk can affect academic success.
• Interventions can narrow disparities.
• Health interventions can improve learning and health.
• Comprehensive programs are better.
The mission of the Learning Support Department at ESD 105 is to build the capacity of schools to create and sustain a safe, healthy and supportive learning community where all students achieve academic and personal success. The Health Services web pages were created with this goal in mind.
School Nurse Corps: School nurses provide leadership in the delivery of school-based health services. As the health care expert within the school, the school nurse assesses the overall system of care and develops plans to ensure that health care needs are met. The school nurse role is broad and complex. The School Nurse Corps site provides information and links to resources about school nursing practice and school-based health services. Information about the School Nurse Corps and the consultation and technical support available from the School Nurse Corps coordinator is provided.
Coordinated School Health: Coordinated School health is an organized, effective and efficient approach to maximizing the health and well-being of both students and school staff. This well researched approach was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Coordinated School Health site offers information and links to a variety of resources on the critical link between health and learning and the Coordinated School Health model.
Migrant Health: The Washington State Migrant Education Health Program provides health care services to migrant students because of our strong belief that healthy students are more likely to reach their fullest educational potential. This site provides information and links to resources about the Migrant Health Program at ESD 105.
