What is STEM?

The STEM initiative is working to integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in the K-20 education system. STEM is a strategy to engage minds which includes:

  • real work application,
  • solving relevant problems, and
  • practical learning using 21st Century tools

STEM builds on a strong foundation of reading, writing, communicating, and the arts. STEM is a way of thinking that helps informed citizens make critical decisions every day.

Break the cycle of poverty through education and employment!
STEM careers are in high demand, require a highly skilled workforce and pay living (family) wages.

Keep our local talent local!
A highly skilled workforce will support new and growing buisness in our region. STEM can raise education attainment and expand the talented workforce our communities need for the future.

Goals

  1. Help our Central Washington communities succeed in the global economy.
  2. Assist students to develop the critical reasoning and problem solving skills that will make them the most productive in the world.
  3. Create an environment where the private sector and buisness community collaborate to support STEM learning.
  4. Strengthen resources available to local schools for STEM learning.
  5. Increase student knowledge of and interest in STEM education and careers for all students.
  6. Support a strong STEM teacher workforce through professional development.
  7. Raise awareness among employers and the public about the advantages of a STEM literate workforce.
  8. Help all students see themselves in the STEM workforce.
