Educational Services

ButterfliesClassOur services are guided by the education reform goal of providing students the opportunity to learn, not only in the classroom but also to work and live as happy, responsible citizens contributing to their own well-being and to that of their families and communities.

Educational Service District 105 strives to take a comprehensive approach to improving school and student success. These efforts link state education reform goals, School Improvement Planning, and the federal law No Child Left Behind.

By developing programs based on district need, we assist in our shared goal of having all learners experience academic and personal success.

Some of the primary educational services we provide to assist in achieving school and student success include:

Early Learning: Educational Services is involved in Early Reading First, ECEAP (Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program), Special Education early intervention, KidScreen, and Born Learning.  (ESD 105 is also the intermediary agency for the Ready by Five program.)

Learning Support: ESD 105 assists school districts and community partners in creating learning environments that are safe, civil, drug-free, and intellectually stimulating places to work and learn.  Programs under Learning Support include Counseling, GEAR UP, KidScreen health screening program, Prevention/Intervention, Safe and Drug-Free Schools, School Nurse Corps, School Safety & Crisis Response, Tobacco Prevention, and Yakima County Prevention.

Migrant Education: Our Migrant Education Regional Office (MERO) works with schools in the ESD 105 region as well as some of the school districts served by ESD 123 and ESD 112.

Special Education: Our services and cooperatives provide assistance in occupational therapy, vision/Braille, autism education, speech language pathology, and Response To Intervention.

• Teaching and Learning: Professional development and special programs are offered through our Arts (ArtFusion), Instructional Improvement, Literacy, Math, Paraprofessional, and Science (Regional Science Education Cooperative & LASER) departments.

• School Improvement Support: In partnership with school districts to achieve success for all students per their district goals, state education reform goals and the federal law No Child Left Behind, Educational Service District 105 will provide facilitation services for all the steps of the school improvement and school-wide planning process. ESD 105 will also help facilitate a process for integrating professional development activities identified in school improvement plans. For information, contact Cathy Benedetti at (509) 454-3120.

• Assessment Services: We help districts build capacity for using classroom assessment strategies to inform and improve student achievement in their schools. Offerings available on site include: assessment practices survey, assessment literacy training, building assessment plan, and curriculum-based assesment item development.  For information on these, contact Cathy Benedetti at (509) 454-3120, Terrie Geaudreau at (509) 454-3124, or Molly Berger at (509) 454-3114.

• Our Administrative leadership programs include Leadership for Learning (for principals), the ESD 105 Superintendents' Networks (Kittitas Valley, Upper Yakima Valley, and Lower Yakima Valley), and the Administrators' Summer Institute.

Our Teacher Assistance Program (TAP) provides mentoring services in such areas as classroom management, individual needs assessment, and assessment tools.

Alternative Route to Teacher Certification: This offering provides a way for paraprofessionals and current B.A. degree holders to obtain teaching certification for high-need areas in as little as one year.

• Recruiting Washington Teachers: This program assists high school students (in Toppenish, Wapato, White Swan, and the Yakama Tribal School) who want to pursue teaching careers in content-shortage areas such as math, science, ELL, and special education.  Selected students participate in a one-year program involving personal goal-setting activities, information on college placement exams, and hands-on classroom teaching experiences.  The project began in January 2008 through a $128,000 grant from Washington's Professional Educator Standards Board.  For information, contact Laura Glenn at (509) 853-1103.

High School Knowledge Bowl: ESD 105 sponsors this knowledge competition program available to teams of students attending all high schools in our region.

We also offer educational technology training through the Educational Technology Support Center in our Technology and Information Services area.
