College Bound Scholarship program
The College Bound Scholarship program is designed to motivate and prepare low-income students in Washington to pursue a college education. This program, facilitated by Washington's Higher Education Coordinating Board , covers the cost of college tuition (at public college/university rates), fees, and a $500 stipend for books for low-income students who sign up during 7th or 8th grade. Participating students must sign a pledge successfully promising to graduate from high school, earn at least a cumulative 2.0 grade point average, demonstrate good citizenship, and complete a FAFSA application during their senior year of high school. Scholarships can be used at public and private colleges in Washington.
Students may apply for the College Bound Scholarship if they meet one of the following:
• Are eligible to receive free and reduced-price lunch
• Receive TANF benefits
• Are a foster youth
• Meet family income standards
Students must enroll in the program no later than June 30 of their 8th grade year, and 7th graders are also encouraged to apply by that date.
Statewide, 90,000 students are eligible for the program. During 2008-2009, the ESD 105 region had 8,123 students eligible for the program, with Mabton achieving 100% participation among its qualifying students. The Higher Education Coordinating Board placed counselors at each of the state's nine ESDs beginning in the spring of 2009 to boost participation in the scholarship program.
