Migrant Parent Services

Engaging parents in the education of their children is key to achieving student academic success. Our Parent Services program assists school communities in the implementation of programs designed to actively involve parents as partners in the education of their children in the home, school and community.

Our Parent Services coordinator is available to assist you in identifying trainings or workshop most helpful for staff and parents.

"Parents as Leaders" Training of Trainers Program A detailed training for a team of individuals who will implement the Migrant Education Regional Office, Parents as Leaders curriculum in their school district. The curriculum was designed and developed specifically for migrant and Hispanic families, and includes the following four sessions: Getting Acquainted/Trust Building, Leadership Defined, Communication, and Goal Setting. The program guides parents to enhance and/or develop leadership skills by using interactive hands-on activities.

Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) Workshops are for school district migrant families on the Migrant Education Program (MEP) and the PAC. Participants gain a greater understanding of how the local PAC functions and their roles as members and officers of the committee.

Parent Advisory Committee Officers Training Detailed training for officers of the PAC on the specific roles and responsibilities of their office, as well as indepth training on the MEP.

Support Math in the Home The workshop provides math activities for parents to enjoy with their children. The activities are age-appropriate, and the families are given materials to take with them. All activities are generated with everyday items found in the home.

Support Reading in the Home This workshop stresses the importance of reading with children. Parents are introduced to wordless books and will practice successful reading techniques. Families are given a variety of materials and reading activities to take home.

What Parents Should Know About ESEA The workshop focus is on the role of parents as partners to the "No Child Left Behind" Act of 2001, and on specific areas in the legislation that greatly affect their children's success in school. Ideas and suggestions are shared on how parents can successfully advocate on behalf of their children.
