Funds of Knowledge

  • ELL students benefit academically “when their home languages and cultures are regarded as assets and are used by the teacher in bridging prior knowledge to new knowledge, and in making content meaningful and comprehensible”. (Understanding Language Stanford University)

The purpose of this toolkit is to empower parents as the primary teachers of their children, and to support educators as they integrate the richness of the migrant lifestyle into the regular classroom. The toolkit contains resources that make it easier for educators to design math, science and literacy activates that include and empower migrant parents who come from Latin America. Most migrant parents grew up playing with the inexpensive games and toys from this toolkit. They usually have fond memories of playing these games as children, and enjoy teaching them to their own children of all ages.
