Vission, Mision, & Integration

ESD 105 is committed to building skills for both teachers and students that include creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking, all vital to closing the opportunity gap.  We believe including the arts in basic education teaches to the whole child, engages all learning modalities, and leads to the development of powerful learning habits. We believe in empowering classroom teachers to use the arts in their day-to-day teaching.

ESD 105 encourages professional learning for teachers to build confidence and competence to integrate the arts into the everyday classroom experience, helping to ensure all children have access to quality arts education.

Art Integration in the Classroom

ESD 105 defines arts-integrated  teaching and learning as a model of arts integration focused on conceptual integration—concepts that are identified and taught in more than one classroom discipline—sharing a common definition of the concept. The premise of arts-integrated learning focuses on the opportunity for students to understand the meaning of a concept at a deep, life application level.  This process of learning provides more than one viewpoint, multiple examples, and complementary ways of understanding. Arts-integrated learning examples include: symmetry (science, dance, math, visual arts); characterization (writing, theater, visual arts, reading); and narrative sequence (reading, writing, visual arts, dance, theater).
