See the award-winning entries from our Regional HS Art Show!

The 2019 edition of the ESD 105 Regional High School Art Show includes 78 works by by a roster of 70 students of teachers from 14 regional high schools:  Davis, East Valley, Eisenhower, Ellensburg, Goldendale, Grandview, Kittitas, La Salle, Naches Valley, Riverside Christian, Toppenish, Wapato, West Valley, and West Chestnut Academy 

The juror for this year’s regional show was David Biehlo, assistant professor of graphic design at Central Washington University.  The winning entries for the 2018 regional show were announced during the opening reception that was held on Saturday, March 2, at the Junior Achievement World site in Yakima. 

In addition to the seven art pieces that are advancing to the state show, two other entries received special recognition as receiving an ESD 105 Regional Award of Merit, and another piece was given the ESD 105 Board Choice Award.  Additionally, five students each received $2,000 scholarships from Central Washington University for their work in this year’s regional show. 

The 46th annual Regional High School Art Show will remain on display at JA World (650 University Parkway in Yakima) through Friday, March 15.  JA World’s regular hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

ESD 105 Awards for OSPI Show: 

  • “Goggle Man” – Pencil artwork by Davis High School 12th grader Marcus Lopez, a student of art teacher Carole Huls.
  • “The Silent Lady” – Clay sculpture by East Valley High School 12th grader Amanda Ausink, a student of art teacher Timothy Hitchcock. 
  • “Singing in the Rain” – Photography by Eisenhower High School 11th grader Rasti Konkol, a student of art teacher Lance Johnson. 
  • “Natural Beauty” – Chalk pastel by West Valley High School 11th grader Brisa Pinon Jimenez, a student of art teacher Grant Johnston.
  • “Navada” – Pen and ink artwork by Toppenish High School 12th grader Alondra Delrio Arcila, a student of art teacher Laura Wise. 
  • “Benjamin” – Prismacolor artwork by Grandview High School 12th grader Destiny Jones, a student of art teacher Kimberley Hall. 
  • “It’s High Noon” – Charcoal artwork by Goldendale High School 12th grader Dianna Toledo, a student of art teacher Scott Gray. 

OSPI’s Superintendent’s High School Art Show how will be on display from April 1 through May 30 at the Old Capitol Building in Olympia.  The awards reception for the state exhibit will be held Friday, May 17, from 1 to 3 p.m.  Awards of $200 cash purchases are expected to be given to 15 of the entries at the statewide show.

 

Students viewing displays at ESD 105 High School Art Show ESD 105 Special Recognition Awards:

Two other entries from the local show received an ESD 105 Regional Award of Merit in special recognition of their level of excellence:

  • “Sister” – Acrylic painting by Ellensburg High School 11th grader Lucia Beck, a student of art teacher Darrin Walter. 
  • “Annoyed” – Charcoal artwork by Riverside Christian School student Ellie Gilmore, a student of art teacher Karen Tranch.

 

ESD 105 Board Choice Award:

One entry in the ESD 105 Regional Show received the ESD 105 Board Choice Award.  This piece was selected to be purchased for a cash award of $250 by the ESD 105 Board of Directors and will join 38 other items in a collection of past years’ student art that is on permanent display at the ESD 105 Conference Center in Yakima. 

  • “Apple of My Eye” – Photography by Eisenhower High School 12th grader Aiden Matthews, a student of art teacher Lance Johnson.

 

Attendees viewing displays at ESD 105 Regional High School Art Show CWU Scholarship Awards:

Scholarship awards to Central Washington University were presented to five of the students in the Regional High School Art Show.  David Bieloh, associate professor of graphic design at CWU, awarded $2,000 art program scholarships to each of the following students in recognition of their artwork in this year’s local show:

  • Ellensburg High School 11th grader Lucia Beck for her acrylic painting titled “Sister.” 
  • Davis High School 12th grader Marcus Lopez for his pencil artwork titled “Goggle Man.”
  • East Valley High School 12th grader Amanda Ausink for her ceramic sculpture titled “The Silent Lady.”
  • Eisenhower High School 11th grader Rasti Konkol for a photograph titled “Singing in the Rain.”
  • West Valley High School 11th grader Brisa Pinon Jimenez for a chalk artwork titled “Natural Beauty.”
