Announcing New Deputy Superintendent-- Shane Backlund!
We are excited to announce that we have filled the position of our new Deputy Superintendent. Effective July 1, 2022, Shane Backlund will assume the role of Deputy Superintendent of the Educational Service District 105 in Yakima, Washington.
Mr. Backlund is currently serving as the Superintendent of the Selah School District. He will continue to serve the students and staff of the Selah School District until the completion of his contract. He is committed to doing his best over these next 7 months and has stated that, “ the staff, community and especially students deserve nothing less.”
Backlund began working in Selah in 2001 where he served as superintendent for ten years and in various administrative roles prior to embarking on his journey as superintendent for 11 years. Prior to working in Selah School District, Mr. Backlund served in various teaching and coaching positions in the Lake Chelan and Ellensburg School Districts from 1995-2001.
Shane Backlund is a graduate of Central Washington University where he earned an M.A. in Educational Administration, a B.A. in Education and a B.S. in Health Education. Mr. Backlund completed the Washington State University Superintendent Field Student Program in April 2010, earning his superintendent credentials.
Mr. Backlund is a well-respected member of our education community, earning several awards for his dedication to student achievement and academic excellence. Backlund was recognized with the Washington Association of School Administrators Award of Merit for regional leadership contributions in the spring of 2018 and was celebrated with a regional Student Achievement Award for leadership in May of 2015 by the same organization. He was also awarded the Selah School District's "Best of the Best Administrator of the Year" award in both 2018 and 2006 and the "Outstanding Educational Service Award" in 2002. Mr. Backlund served on the Central Washington University Alumni Board of Directors from 2008 to 2016, the Washington Association of School Administrators Board from 2017 to 2020, and is currently on the Board of Directors for both the Selah Downtown Association and Selah Education Foundation.
When asked why he is most excited for his new opportunity with ESD 105, Backlund has said that he is, “excited about something new and different,” and the ability to, “collaborate with a whole new group of people.” He also celebrated the leaders in our region and shared that he most enjoys, “helping to develop other leaders and supporting those leaders with the types of services they need in a constantly changing educational environment.” Backlund loved being a teacher and he loved being a leader and thinks this new role is the perfect opportunity to be able to do both.
